June 26/27 Marco and I had a fun weekend in Merritt and attending the cozy Nicola Valley shows on Sunday and Monday.
I had the pleasure of showing 9 month old Marsanne (Jetstream Marsanne Veraison) to WD/BOW/BOB (no specials) in the first show for 3 points, and BOW/BOB and Best Puppy in Group at the second show, to gain half his points toward his Canadian Ch.
He decided it would be fun to carry the show lead in his mouth and leaped with a fancy maneuver trying to catch a butterfly that wandered into the ring.

April 2016 AWC National Specialty
Our 3 day drive there was fairly uneventful, meeting up in Oregon and travelling together after that. A lot of laughs and miles. We did see some amusing signs along the way, including an ad for a hotel that boasted “Bathrooms that are safe”. And the billboard that had a 3D cow nailing up the billboard with the words “Eat more Chikin”. And the road signs that were stacked together with “Cemetery Road” above “Dead End”.
It seems that we alarmed a couple staying in the same hotel on the way home. She had a small fluffy white dog, and when she saw us with four whippets, scooped up her dog and whispered loudly to her partner, “There are PIT BULLS staying here!”. She would pull the curtains aside and watch us when we were walking the dogs, and scoot inside her room if we came down the hall. So we decided to play along, and when in earshot, made sure we told “Killer” and “Harley” that we would let them keep their muzzles off if they were good.
Another interesting rest stop included a toilet that needed an exorcism as it kept flushing on its own.
One hotel on the trip had something we had never seen before. A pancake machine. Press a button, wait a minute or so, and a couple of mini pancakes come rolling out the end. We thought this would be neat to have at home. Then read the side of the machine that said “You know you want this at home!”
We had an oh-oh moment when nearing LA, when the GPS system magically switched from English to Spanish.
It was nice to see all the lovely dogs entered in the show and congratulate all the dogs that showed and were handled beautifully. Saw and bought some lovely items from the vendors. The grounds were quite beautiful with blooming roses and greenery and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. Wildlife included many, many whippets, birds, snails, butterflies and small lizards.
Tristan turned 5 years old over the week, and his kids had a nice week. It was fantastic to watch D’Gaye and her Karmen (Regalia Painted Heart) qualify in Rally Novice to complete her RN title at the National, with a score of 97, the overall second highest Rally score. What a great team.
Yvaine (Jetstream Tryst at Stormhold) had fun in Futurity and showed her heart out, ending up being the youngest as the only 6 – 8 month entered, and received a nice ribbon and medallion. She also passed her CGC test, such a good girl.
Tristan was only entered in Stud Dog class, and we were thrilled with a fourth placement under judge Susie Osburn. Thank you to Christy Nelson and Rhonda Gifford for handling your beautiful girls.
Katniss (Multi BIMBS UKC CH Regalia Where The Heart Is) did us proud by making the cut in a very high quality entry in Bred By, handled by Rhonda.
Fawn beauty CC (Ortona Candy Crush at Runners) was handled beautifully by Christy to a third placement in her class, and the fawn princess Precious (Regalia Gilded Heart Of Raybar) placed fourth. I was so happy to meet the Arizona girls Katniss, Precious and Devon for the first time.
We are also very grateful to D’Gaye and Cathryn Day for adopting Tristan over the week so he could hang out with girls not in season. He was quite disappointed that his new best friends couldn’t come back home with us.

Apr 17 We had fun back at Barn Hunt today, with Yvaine’s second trial day in Novice, and she was the entertainment of the morning. She blasted through the tunnel twice, doing laps, skidding and sliding around on loose hay, saying hello to ring crew, and still managed to indicate the rat in record time. 37.81 seconds to be exact, which awarded her overall High in Class in Novice, finishing a full minute under the next qualifier (we are allowed 2 minutes). Very pleased as she just turned 7 months.
Daddy dog Tristan hurt a toe last week so unfortunately wasn’t able to play, so we’ll look forward to it later this year.

Mar 19 WA Barn Hunt. First trial since the fall, and Yvaine gained a leg in Novice at 6 months and 6 days of age, with a second in division. The judge commented that she was having a party in the rat ring lol. Daddy dog Tristan gets his last leg to complete his Barn Hunt Senior (RATS) – first Canadian whippet with the title, and 8th whippet overall. On our way home, the border crossing guard peered inside the car into the crates and announced “they look pooped”. It was a long but happy day.
Mar 18 York, PA at the Whippet Supported entry under John Arvin, Tristan x Cheekie son Luka (Jetstream Tapestry’s Red Mesa) was WD, BOW, Best Owner/handler, Best Puppy, and Puppy Group 1 for a 5 point major! wow. 6 months and 5 days old! Huge congratulations to Grace and Heather Larsen and breeder Lorraine Burch. Large entries of 14-29 class dogs. Loki (Ocean’s Carissima) enjoyed his ferry rides and did us proud with a RWD (to his half brother) and two WD (no class bitches), finishing his Canadian Championship under Australian judge Joanne Sewell. Loki is a VERY enthusiastic show dog and kept me on my toes:) He is the third Can CH from the Tristan x Palace litter.
Another pleasant part of attending the small shows on the Island trip was watching Zarina’s littermate, the very athletic Watson (Hilerica Tofino) in the ring with breeder/owner/handler Carole Adley. He was WD 3 of the 4 days entered, and RWD the other day. Watson went Group 3 one day under Richard Fehler – what a nice compliment to a half race/show combination.

It was a rough road with him breaking his leg almost one year ago when he was 6 months of age, but he healed exceptionally well, and shown sparingly in the 12 – 18 class, he almost had a clean sweep in the show ring – other than one reserve, he was WD or better in every show entered.
Thank you Shivaun and family for all your hard work in the rehabilitation and care for Thias – we couldn’t have done it without you!
May 23/24 Barn Hunt Bellingham, WA. We attended our second Barn Hunt trial weekend, and had ratfastic results LOL.
Entering Open level for the first time, Tristan qualified in 3 runs to finish his Open title RATO! Not only did he have 3 placements in his division (first, second and third), he was HIGH in Trial in Open in one trial (awarded to the fastest dog out of all heights in the Open entries)! He is only the 9th whippet in North America with this title.
According to the stats, Tristan is the first and only Canadian whippet with a Barn Hunt title.
Tanzy was entered for the first time, and she passed her RATI Instinct test as well as a leg in Novice. Not bad for our 8.5 year old.. she finds pleasure in indicating each and every tube, rat or not, so will need more time to figure out her cues.

Mar 21/22 Barn Hunt trial, WA. Tristan rocked the rat ring this weekend : ) Attended our first Barn Hunt trial this weekend, and Tristan passed his RATI Instinct test and went on to qualify in his Novice runs for his RATN, finishing with a 4th placement, to finish his 20th title. He loved it, pulling me toward the barn, front legs ourstretched in his usual Zombie style. Absurdly pleased that he didn’t lift his leg once on the hay bales, he was too busy working. Something new for me, with scentwork and learning to read indication signals.
“Here’s the rat, mom!”
Mar 14 UKC show, AZ. Katniss shown today by Rhonda, with a Best Female and a Reserve Female. 5 month old CC (Ortona Candy Crush at Runners) had a wonderful show debut – Reserve Best Puppy in Multi-Breed fun match! Congratulations, girls!
